Claiming back Statutory Sick Pay

The Government has just launched the online Coronavirus Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) Rebate Scheme enabling small and medium sized employers to recover SSP payments made to their employees.

Launched on 26 May via gov.uk, SME businesses with less than 250 employees can apply to HMRC to recover the costs of paying SSP in relation to coronavirus.

Firstly, employers can check here if you can claim back SSP paid to employees.

The repayment covers up to two weeks of SSP to employee’s sickness starting on or after 13 March 2020. This includes whether the employee had symptoms or was shielding from 16 April.

The HMRC scheme covers all types of employment contracts such as: full and part-time employees; those on agency contracts or flexible or zero-hour contracts.

The current rate of SSP is £95.85 per week. Employers can choose to go further and pay more than the statutory minimum. This is known as occupational or contractual sick pay.
