Businesses employing EU citizens
Now that we have come to the end of the Brexit transition period (31 December 2020), business owners need to be up to speed with the law regarding employment of EU citizens.
For those employing someone from outside the UK, businesses will need a sponsor licence. This includes citizens of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland who arrived in the UK after 31 December 2020. This is also required for unpaid work such as running a charity. You can find out further detail about UK visa sponsorship for employers here.
A new points-based system for EU citizens is in place that employers need to familiarise themselves with. It means that EU citizens applying for jobs in the UK will be considered as those applying from anywhere else in the world.
The latest update from the government regarding the points based system can be found here. It also includes further details including identifying whether a job meets the required skill level, a graduate route, through to advice regarding EU citizens already living here.

We understand that businesses are facing a lot of challenges due to COVID-19 and therefore the additional navigation of these new employment rules for EU citizens may be causing further issues and take their toll on the day to day running of a business.
