Register for self-assessment by 5 October
A reminder that the last date to register for your self assessment tax return is 5 October 2021. This applies to anyone required to register for the previous tax year.
Self-assessment tax return
In the last tax year (6 April to 5 April) if you were self-employed as a ‘sole trader’ and earned more than £1,000 (before taking off anything you can claim tax relief on) or a partner in a business partnership you are required to register and send in a tax return.
If you are on a payroll this should not affect you unless you have income from:
- Renting out a property
- Commission
- Income from savings, investments and dividends
- Foreign income
You can find out more from HMRC about self-assessment here and if you need to send a return.
If you’ve not already registered you can do this online and soon after registering you will receive your Unique Tax Reference number. Once you have this you can then start to prepare your information and complete your tax return well in advance of the 31 January deadline.
There are different ways to register depending whether you are self-employed, not self-employed or a partner/partnership – register for your self-assessment here.
